"Father of UHV" was promoted to the Chinese Academy of Engineering

In China, the UHV grid refers to a transmission network with a voltage of 1000 kV and DC ±800 kV and above. Its biggest feature is that it can deliver power over long distances, large capacity and low loss.

In the eyes of most people, the UHV can help the heat of the former State Grid Chairman Liu Zhenya. He is therefore known as the "UHV godfather."

However, it is little known that the construction of the UHV project was truly the result of the team led by Sun Hao, the former director of the UHV Construction Department of the State Grid.

The "father of UHV" hidden behind the scenes led the construction of the world's first commercialized UHV line with independent intellectual property rights, making UHV a new Chinese business card after the high-speed rail.

Sun Hao and UHV became in 2006. In August of that year, China's first UHV line—Jindongnan—Nanyang—Jingmen 1000 kV UHV AC pilot demonstration project was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission.

In less than a month, Sun Wei was transferred from the president of China Electric Power Research Institute to the director of the UHV Construction Department newly established by the State Grid.

Previously, Sun Wei, as a power expert, had written three opinions on UHV exchange engineering and was concerned by the top management.

At that time, the controversy over UHV remained fierce. Opponents argue that the UHV engineering tests carried out by developed countries such as the former Soviet Union, Japan, Italy and the United States decades ago failed. As a backward country, China is very difficult to overcome.

But Sun Hao insisted that UHV should be chosen.

He said: "The development of UHV transmission is determined by China's power demand and development conditions. It solves the problems of existing power grids, promotes the development of clean energy, promotes the development of domestic electrical equipment manufacturing industry, promotes reliable supply of electricity, and guarantees national energy security. Significant strategic significance."

Sun Hao came to the UHV Construction Department. The “frontier command” of this UHV project construction is the functional department directly responsible for the construction and management of the UHV test demonstration project.

Here, Sun Hao will transform the decision of the superior into tactical action, command and communication of scientific research, design, demonstration, equipment manufacturing, infrastructure construction terminals, so as to achieve a consistent pace.

"From October 2008, until the end of the year, the project was successfully put into operation. I spent most of my time sleeping in the office or sleeping on the construction site." Sun Hao once recalled the hardships of UHV construction.

After more than two years of hard work, on January 6, 2009, the Jindongnan-Nanyang-Jingmen 1000 kV UHV AC pilot demonstration project passed the trial operation.

This is the world's first commercial high-voltage AC transmission line. Seeing the success of the project, an expert from the Russian Federation’s Institute of Electrical Engineering once sighed and sighed for the failure of the former Soviet Union.

A year later, Sun Hao and his team conquered another worldwide problem.

They independently developed, designed and built the world's first UHV DC transmission demonstration project - Sichuan Xiangjiaba - Shanghai ± 800 kV UHV DC transmission demonstration project, and officially put into operation.

After the successful operation of China's UHV AC-DC project, it was highly appraised by the international electrical industry and the international electrical equipment manufacturing industry. The International Electrotechnical Commission called it "an important milestone in the history of the development of the power industry."

On September 24, 2013, the State Grid's UHV transmission technology standards were officially established by the International Electrotechnical Commission as an international standard in this field.

Klaus Uhler, chairman of the International Electrotechnical Commission, said: "With this standard, other countries in the world can continue to develop on this basis and put UHV technology into the application."

At the beginning of the year, “Key Technology, Complete Equipment and Engineering Applications for UHV AC Transmission” also won the 2012 National Science and Technology Progress Award.

Now, together with seven experts in the electrical field, such as He Jinliang, Cui Xiang, Dong Xinzhou, Zhang Ping, Wang Weisheng, Wang Guohai and Wang Shumin, Sun Hao is launching an attack on the titles of academicians of the two academies.
